Recommendation

I really love to learn. I love to read. I love to watch documentaries. And I am easily swayed by them. Hey, at least I am aware of it. I watched "Food Matters" this past week (thanks for the idea, Priscilla!) and found it to be fascinating. (I use that word a lot.) I highly recommend it--it is available streaming on Netflix. I think it's going to change the way I eat. I am wanting to head more towards the vegetarian persuasion. Not totally--I don't think that would be practical. But I am definitely going to be cutting back on meat drastically. (Technically I think I will be called a pescetarian, or semi-vegetarian with a leaning towards the Mediterranean diet.) And also I am really interested in doing more with vitamins. Well, I just think you should all watch this movie and see what you think.

(Ryan thinks I will only last a month on my new plan. But I have done really good with giving up Diet Coke, cutting back on sugar and eating oatmeal every day. I am ready to take on the challenge of less meat and more raw fruits, veggies, beans and nuts! Recipes, anyone?)

It's been the same story over here, since we watched this movie. At first, we attempted to cut out meat and all animal products completely, but as you mentioned, it's not practical (particularly when you're on a strict grocery budget). We do use some cheese, turkey, and fish, though sparingly. Still working on weaning the kids off of cows milk and onto soy or almond milk, which I've personally been drinking for a few years now. The hardest part is we love meat! So here's what I've found helpful: Boca Veggie burgers are excellent, and really satisfy a burger craving, and the kids love them. Also, the Boca (or Morning Star) "Chicken" veggie patties and "Chicken" nuggest are a huge hit with our family. These two brands you can find at Wal-Mart, and the price isn't too bad.

We don't eat eggs like we used to, either. I still use them for baking, and occasionally for the kids' breakfast, if there's nothing else, because...well, they're free from our chickens!
Chris and I have agreed we need to re-watch this movie every once in a while to remind us about all the info...it's all about reprogramming ourselves from what we've been "trained" to believe about food. Good luck!

I just got the cookbook "How to Cook Everything Vegetarian" by Mark Bittman and its awesome! So many good recipes- and varied! I think going veg, for me, has been one of the best things I have done for myself. I LOVE it.

Erin--I just got his book Food Matters from the library today and I can't wait to start it! I'll have to get that cookbook, too. I need good, easy ideas that are family-friendly as well.
